As we are entering National Stress Awareness Month, I would like to take more time and describe stress better for you from the perspective of health. What do you mean - what symptoms are directly related to stress? How should it be managed? And do we need to define it before it actually becomes a problem? Moreover, a scenario such as an intense job or taking care of other people that often has no end may sometimes be a lot to cope with.
Building on this, I spoke with Dr Elizabeth Wen from CNN to help deal with these points. A Wen who makes a living as an associate professor of the emergency department and student at George Washington University. She was the health commissioner for the city of Baltimore, MD previous to her election.
Stress effect on body health how?
Dr. Leana Wen: Release of diverse hormones like adrenaline, epinephrine, etc. Unlike threats from dangers, these confined settings activate an instantaneous fight or flight response in our brains, which raises blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart rate. Besides that, hormone levels regulate metabolism and contribute to the decrease of nutrient absorption and speed at the immune system by draining energy from those processes. Those are the inheritances that ancestors got genetically transferred throughout generation for the purpose of overcoming conditions like fleeting from predators. The way the brain deals with such situations is quite common and, moreover, could now be the very thing that people need for them to survive the world. In this manner, their work involves, for instance, helping a student who has to work late on the task before a test or an athlete who aims to run faster.
The body stress hormone when it stays longer in the system is the source of the problem. The non-stop "fight or flight" cause more chronic diseases which effect the quality of life. Depression, anxiety, and various other psychological issues are likely to affect a large segment of the population. Besides that they could suffer from headache, tense muscles, stomach problems, sleep problems, low immune system of disease, memory and concentration decreases. Chronic stress plays this role as well and demonstrates that it is a factor that increases cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke.
As usual, stress is a familiar phenomena to us, but when does it cease to be simply that?
Wen: There exist situations when those who are involved in certain important life events for instance giving birth to a child, beginning a job, getting divorced or losing a loved one for that time experience stress resulting in stress response in their natural state. This issue is at stake when tensions becomes a long term emotional state of being rather than just a fleeting temporary moment of anger or agitation.
Warning signs that individuals should watch out for include physical symptoms of stress or symptoms and signs of mental wellness difficulties, such as if someone is experiencing headaches, palpitations or upper body pain. Moreover their patients tend to become addicted to drugs or alcohol when they try to alleviate the stress. Shift to a certain type of substance may denote the necessity of identifying stressors that brought the use of substance.
Tell to the person what the signs of the stress are if he or she is no longer able to do the job, to be with the family and friends. Overwhelming stress can turn a person very touchy. For example, they may snap at their friends and family as well as professional colleagues.
What must we care to do to protect our health if we are overstressed?
That is to say, we need to make up our minds to lessen the stress.
Wen: Extreme stress happens the way you feel, all the time, and, the same as high blood pressure or blood sugar level, is something you can manage. It undoubtedly can be that the stressor itself is the thing which cannot be touched upon, just like in bad genetics diabetes or high pressure cannot be cured. While we may not be able to avoid the pain, we do can control how we react to it. Above all, the manner in which we react to any stressor is a major factor determining how our health outcomes come out. There are potent approaches that we must and can explore to reduce stress-contributed to health problems, just as we have with hypertension or diabetes.
How about some tactics for beating stress?
Wen: It is very important to say early that there are the ways to handle the stress that make you feel much better and even some of them help to prevent illnesses. It is also important to understand that there are bad stress management practices. Although, of course, these methods can be dangerous, some people incline to use them in the moment of distress due to certain psychological effects that they might have. I mentioned using drugs and drinking alcohol as coping tools, both of which, additionally, are extremely unhealthy choices. The other example is smoking or overeating (as well).
Self-awareness is, apparently one of the sexiest things, according to me. Be honest with yourself: Are there times in your life when you prefer these unhealthy coping mechanisms rather than facing the hard realities in life situations? If this is the case, work hard at tuning yourself out from these bad habits especially in moments of stress. But always keep a tab through out the day.
Besides this, be active in trying to forecast stressful times at your convenience. Are there latest deadlines or more pressing matters which are affecting your work? Gathering as a family or even going to a family reunion that may be unpleasant? When a friend and I had a fight that we ended up not talking for a few weeks, it had a strong impact on me. It can be useful to have a plan of action in place for when many unpleasant events occur so that you can know how you really respond and how you can cope with the situation.
Consider creating a list of things that you find helpful in managing the stress level. While the traditional watering methods such as drip irrigation are still relevant, also try the new ones. Everybody can get to relax and restore their inner strength and energy through deep inhales and meditative thinking for example, and these practices can either be exercised alone or while still out there in the streets.
I really have a tendency to working out a lot as well. The current scientific pool of evidence suggests that gaining regular physical activity would help alleviate stress in the most efficient way. Partaking in the endorphins, such as those that are released during an exercise session, that can have a calming effect on the body or a mood-enhancing effect, which declines stress hormones.
Considering such things as the time management, carefully plan your day so that all are completed without any issues.
Wen: Actually, this is a much harder task for me than to get away from the pressures that are happening now. Nonetheless, still the problem persists there are a significant number of people living in the unchangeable difficult situations.
I greatly think that being truthful with this and giving yourself the chance to believe that you have no power to change these circumstances is the best choice. In the end, what you are going to make of that situation, even though you do not control it, is up to you.
So it this time at which self-knowledge and self-care are vital. Realize a time that you are in a high stress level for you. Maybe you have muscle pain in your head and back, or that you have experiencing constant nausea in your stomach. Here is the right time for embarking on some short term, self-beneficial activities like deep breathing, meditation and many such small yet effective practices.
The health benefits of scheduling self-care activities on a consistent basis are, beyond any question, crucial. Such activities help both the person immediately and in the future. In simple terms, this involves freeing up some time for yourself to do such activities like sports, dancing, or any other stuff that helps you to unwind from pressure. Such activities may include chatting with a good buddy, mending the yard, having fun with the pet, gisting with a book, or doing something else whilst taking in the environment. View the time devoted for the self as a type of therapy; alternate illness, this treatment is your means of averting “illness” so that you will stay healthy.
Firstly, as you know, stress is one of those things that can cause you to be ill. Second, consider improving other health indicators besides stress. Still better is this way: try to get required 7-8 hours sleep. Choose more whole, nutritious ones and better limit your consumption of those highly processed ones. Ensure that the fact that chronic issues, including high blood pressure, also need care is being taken into account. Adding to this, if the stress that is trepidating chemicals or emotions in large measure is leading to persisting or chronic pains, then, do not wait to visit your doctor or mental health specialist.
