What is self-esteem?
What is self-esteem? Self-esteem is how we feel and evaluate ourselves. Fragile self-awareness is a kind of self-awareness that fluctuates every day or every moment. It is influenced by positive and negative experiences provided externally (for example, when colleagues praise or belittle us) or generated internally (when we reflect on our performance after a speech). Or, stable self-awareness rarely changes.
People usually think of self-esteem and confidence as repeating a story, a story that makes us look or feel very good, remembered over and over again. But what happens when negative thoughts inevitably flood in and challenge the validity of the story? A common way to deal with negative thoughts is to try to change them forcibly or retrain our thoughts to make them more positive. But if we pay great attention to looking for any negative thoughts, are we often troubled by negative thoughts? Suddenly, this approach seemed counterproductive, let alone exhausted. On the other hand, true self-esteem is the ability to let go of old stories and open up to experience the fragility and uncertainty caused by no more comfortable person.
When we can realize that our thoughts and feelings are not the sum of ours, we can obtain a kind of stable and calm confidence that is not affected by the internal or external world. Self-esteem is affected by past events and depends on future events. On the contrary, self-esteem occurs in the present, from a calm mind, no longer strongly identifying with fleeting thoughts and feelings, but as seeing them as fleeting. So how do we begin to release the control of our thoughts and feelings from us? The answer is of course: meditation. Headspace guided the self-esteem meditation.
The impact of self-esteem meditation
Imagine the mind as a blue sky, a blank canvas with thoughts, feelings and experiences on it. The true essence of the mind is peace, light, clarity and happiness. But when it is overwhelmed by negative thoughts, the mind becomes gloomy, dark, and even stormy. We feel overwhelmed by these ideas and identify with them in a way that reduces our confidence and sense of self-worth. This is why meditation can be a powerful and transformative way to increase self-esteem. No matter the sky is cloudy, we all know that there will always be a blue sky on the other side. The same goes for the mind: no matter how busy it looks, we know that if we can stop long enough for it to appear, then there is always a sense of latent stillness and quiet confidence. Just like the blue sky, the still heart always exists and is available for us to use. We learn to enter this spacious and clear place through meditation.

You can find many self-esteem meditations, self-love meditations, and compassion meditations on the Headspace app, which contain a variety of different techniques, including visual meditation, which involves paying attention to a person or more abstract things to maintain focus. If you want to give it a try, this mini meditation is a good starting point.
First, find a comfortable position, take a few deep breaths, inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Close your eyes gently and feel the weight of your body. Let your attention move above your head and imagine a steady stream of warm sunlight flowing into your body, eliminating any stress. Imagine sunlight hitting your toes, bringing tranquility and a sense of space. Feel how it fills your body and eliminates any discomfort or tension. Now imagine that the warm sunlight flows slowly along your legs to your waist and upper body. Feel it gradually rising through your chest, spreading around your shoulders and back, and flowing along your arms to your hands and fingers. As they move along the throat, neck, and head to the face, until they reach the top of the head, the final area of tension becomes smooth. Sitting in a feeling of warmth, calm and comfort. Let this feeling keep going. Now, release the image. In your own time, gently open your eyes. Try to recognize the quality of your thoughts at that moment, and plan to bring this awareness into the rest of the day.
